5 Lessons I Learned as a Tutor

So my subscribers know that they receive exclusive content before the rest of my readers. If you are not a subscriber you should become one so you can take advantage of having this exclusive content before anyone else.

That being said one of the exclusives that I do every month is called “Five Things.” “Five Things” is a feature which gives readers a look into 5 things someone has learned or 5 ways to do something. Last months feature was “5 Things that I have Learned from Tutoring.”  This subscriber exclusive is now featured below.

5 Things That I Have Learned as a Tutor

For the last six years,  I have had almost 100 different clients from all ages: preschool through college. I have exponentially more knowledge about the education process than I had six years ago. Therefore, I want to share some of this knowledge with you.

1) Success Begins Early

It is never too early to start working with your child on learning. Those who do well in school are learning way before they even set foot on a school campus or start homeschool. Preschool students can learn their colors, alphabet, reading, and motor skills before they go to school and most of this is learned through simple play. With these young ones, it isn’t about being strict but making learning fun so that they want to be lifelong learners.
Likewise, for older students, especially when it comes to standardized tests, it is never too early to start preparing. Many of these tests are less about how smart a student is but more about how well they know that specific test. Those who are thinking about the test at least a year before they must take it are better off in the long run.

2) There are a lot of Standardized Tests

Seriously the sheer number of standardized test that our students are given within the school system is crazy. Over the last six years, I have learned about the ISEE, SSAT, HSPT (Tests to get into private schools), PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP TESTS, the I-READY test, and state testing. All these tests have a different type of format, and in order for a student to succeed in these, they must know the format. So becoming test savvy is essential.

3) Students Learn in Different Ways

There are four main ways that students learn. Visual, Audio, Read and Write, and Kinesthetic. For longer descriptions and to take a free test to learn how you or your child learns take the VARK questionnaire.

4) There are a lot of Free Resources Out There

The sheer number of free worksheets on the internet is amazing. There are sites with worksheets for every grade level and every concept. The College Board also has 8 free SAT practices tests and an interactive study aid called KHAN Academy. Kuta Software has great higher-level math lessons. These are only some of the free resources open to parents. If you think you can’t afford tutoring these resources are available to you at no cost. I list many of these resources on my resource page, go there to check them out.

5) Tutoring is for Everyone

Tutoring is not just for those who are struggling or the overachievers that are trying to get ahead. It is for all kinds of students from struggling, to average, to the overachiever. It is also for all kinds of social economic levels. The poor can find access to resources that can help their students.  Anyone and everyone can benefit from someone helping them succeed in their learning.
