Double Digit Multiplication Games
Double digit multiplication can be hard. Students can get mixed up with what number they are multiplying by another number. They also may get mixed up with the placeholder. Plus students may also just not find multiplication fun and exciting. However, there is one way that students can enjoy double digit multiplication and that is double digit multiplication games. There are so many double digit multiplication games as well that students can use to master their multiplication and have fun while they do it.

Double Digit Multiplication Games #1 Boom Cards
If you have been around here for a bit you know that I am pretty much obsessed with boom cards. They are so easy for teachers to do and students love them. Students get automatic feedback, they are self-grading, and you can see which questions your students are getting wrong and what they need more help with. They also can be used for so many things: math centers, group work, ipad/computer time, homework etc.
Build a Cupcake Double Digit Multiplication
No matter what time of the year it is, when I am working on double digit multiplication with my students I pull out my build a cupcake double digit multiplication boom card set.
In this set students will solve three double digit multiplication problems using the standard algorithm. After they solve three problems then they will be able to build a cupcake. There are so many items to build their cupcakes and the kids have so much fun building cupcakes and see it as a great reward after doing some double digit multiplication problems.
After they finish that round there are three more rounds. So in total there are 12 multiplication problems and 4 chances to build a cupcake.
As a teacher, I have broken down this set so that I can see every step of the process and know exactly where students are messing up. If they do not complete every step of the process correctly I can see where exactly they are struggling and what I have to review.
Build a Bakery Double Digit Multiplication
The build a bakery double digit multiplication boom card deck is pretty much the same concept as the cupcake boom deck with one difference. This time students will be building a bakery. Other than that the concept is the same across the board.
One of the great things about the bakery boom deck however is that you can do cross-curriculum activities with it. You can have students write a story about their bakery or pretend that they opened up a bakery. Then you can ask them what they will sell and why they opened a bakery etc. This will get them writing and using their imaginations.

Double Digit Multiplication Games #2 20 Sided Dice Games
Another great one of the double digit multiplication games is dice. There are so many double digit multiplication games that you can play with dice if you have 20 sided dice. You will need at least 2 20 sided dice per student in order for a lot of these games to work. If you don’t have that many dice you can either have students break into groups or you can do the digital version of dice on toy theater.
Toy Theater
If you do not have the funds to buy 20 sided dice for every student or you want your students to have dice at home but cannot lend out yours or afford to buy them more then you need to look into digital math manipulatives. The best one that I have found for dice is toytheater.com.
This website has a lot of different math manipulatives and one of them is dice. They have so many choices when it comes to dice. They have traditional ones but also 9 sided, 20 sided, 12 sided, six sided and so much more. This will allow your students to be able to choose different ones based on where they are in multiplication. This could also help you differentiate these double digit multiplication games.
You can work with toy theater where each student has it on a computer or ipad or you can break students off in groups and have them take turns answering questions.
Dice Multiplication Race
In this game you can have two groups of students and they will be racing to see who can solve the problem faster. Each of them will roll a 20 sided dice and then they will multiply the number that comes up on each dice. Whoever does it the fastest wins and gets a point. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Double Digit Multiplication Games # 3 Multiplication Race
Another variation of the game above can be done without dice and with the whole class. You can write a question on the board and students will race up to the board to solve the problem. Whoever gets it done the fastest and gets it right gets a point. Whichever team has more points at the end wins the game.
Another multiplication race that you can do is a race with the whole class over the course of the year. The boat race in The Ultimate Multiplication Toolkit can also be used to help kids with their multiplication. It does not specifically work with double digit multiplication but single digit multiplication will help students with double digit multiplication. Double Digit Multiplication Games #4 Area Model Games
Another category of double digit multiplication games is area model games. Area models are a way to solve double-digit multiplication problems. This way is a little more visual than the standard algorithm and it also has much more real world application that can be visualized by using it. Look at a couple suggestions for double digit multiplication games below that use area models.
Who Has More Area
The first area model double digit multiplication game is the game who has more area. In this game, students will draw double digit multiplication problems out of a hat then they will solve the problem by drawing an area model on grid paper. Two students are paired up for this activity and they each take turns and draw the area models with their colors on the paper. Once all the problems have been solved then they will add up their areas and whoever has the most will win.
Area Simulators
The last double digit multiplication game on this list is an online area simulator. In this game students will be able to see how the problems that they are being asked are played out in an area model. There are three modes that students can explore and work through. However, I suggest the game mode. This mode will actually have students answering questions and seeing how area models are set up. Students need to be able to put area models together because this is something that they will be asked to do on state tests, and what better way to teach it than through a fun game.
