Fall Activities for Preschoolers #1 Pumpkin Painting

So one of the biggest activities of the fall would have to be jack o lanterns for Halloween. These are also great for decorating your homes over the course of the month of October. However, with preschoolers, you may be a little weary to give them knives but a paint brush would not make you as nervous.

So instead of pulling out the knives this year for pumpkins, why don’t you pull out the paint? There are even some amazing kits for pumpkins painting that you can get. Most of them still focus on the idea of having a face of some sort on your pumpkin but with painting the options are basically limitless.

If you want to keep this project for years to come and be able to bring it out year after year you can get some craft pumpkins and paint on those that way they would go bad and you can keep it to decorate for next year. Hello, Giggles featured some really cute unicorn pumpkin with fake pumpkin and it would be absolutely adorable to do with your little ones.

Fall Activities for Preschoolers # 2 Green Kid Crafts Fall Boxes

First, off Green Kid Crafts is amazing. They offer so many types of art and science discovery boxes for kids and you can get them as a subscription or you can just buy the boxes individually.

For fall though they have two special boxes this fall. One is the Mad Scientist Halloween Box. This box contains a fizzy lamp, that seems a bit like a sensory bottle as well, monster slime, and a magnet friend. This box is aiming to teach magnet properties, and density to students while they have a lot of fun. Plus the monster slime is just super cute.

The next box is all about Thanksgiving. This one contains two projects. One of them is a thankfulness tree. This is an awesome way as a family to think about what you are thankful for. It can be the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving table. This box will also teach your preschoolers about the importance of being thankful. It also comes with the cutest little turkey placeholders. There is only four of them so if you have a big family not everyone would get one. But maybe you can put them in the center of the table and this can be your preschooler’s way to contribute to the table this Thanksgiving.

Fall Activities for Preschoolers #3 Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

As a kid, I absolutely loved roasted pumpkin seeds. I still do but I don’t get the chance to make them enough. Preschoolers are perfect little helpers in the kitchen. They may make a bit of a mess but cooking teaches them some much-needed skills. It helps with motor skills and really just life skills overall.

Also, the only way to get amazing pumpkin seeds is to get a little bit dirty. You can wield the knife but once you cut the top off the pumpkin have your preschoolers dig in to get the seeds out. They will love the feeling of the squishiness of the pumpkins and will be great at getting all those seeds out. I would suggest having them put them in a bowl and then you guys can wash them together.

Once you wash them have your preschooler scatter them across a baking sheet and give them a paper towel to pat them dry. Finally, sprinkle them with salt and bake them at 300 for 45 minutes, stirring them occasionally.

Then you can have a great little snack. With the rest of the pumpkin, you can bake it until it is soft then puree it in your blender and you can make anything that you would use pumpkin puree in with it. Plus 100% better than pumpkin from a can.

Fall Activities for Preschoolers #4 Leaf and Apple Prints

Pumpkins get most of the attention in fall but apples are also quite a big part of the fall theme. You can make really awesome prints by cutting an apple in half either horizontally or vertically. Then put some paint on it and have your children stamp them on paper or on t-shirts if you want something that they can wear in the future.

Also, leaves are a major part of Fall. As it gets colder leaves change colors and fall from the trees. This stamping can also work with leaves. Have fun with your children by going a collecting some leaves (note don’t pick out dried out ones this will work better if the leaf has most of its structural integrity.) When you are done picking out leaves have them paint and stamp the leaf onto paper or a shirt again. This will be fun for them getting to mess in some paint and fun for use as you decorate your house with the prints or just watch them running around in their t-shirts.

Fall Activities for Preschoolers #5 Halloween Masks

Another amazing thing that happens in the fall is Halloween. Now I have never been a huge fan of Halloween. However, since I have started going to my current church I have been pretty into Halloween because they are very into Halloween. The main reason being that we throw a huge block party every year we call Halloweenland and we have it open for any kids that want to come out in hopes that we can give them a great safe Halloween.

Halloween is a great holiday for preschoolers if we are just talking about the dressing up and getting candy part of it. Preschoolers love to dress up and play make-believe so why not create an activity that helps them do just that by making Halloween Masks. There are plenty of templates online that you can use and build off of. If you want to get sturdier masks that is also possible.

If you decide to print the masks you can have your preschoolers color them and use stickers to bring them to life. Foam stickers would make them a bit more 3D which is a cool effect.

If you are working with the sturdier masks you can get all types of supplies from beads to rhinestones and ribbons. These things may be too heavy for the paper makes but would be perfect on the sturdier masks. You may just need more glue to make sure they stick.

  1. Nice activities. I especially love the stamping ones. I also loved to take my preschooler for an evening walk to talk about sunset and its beautiful colors. Especially in September because the sunset was around 7 pm and it was a perfect time for us to walk around. We both loved it.

  2. I like the way you’ve got a seasonal aspect to your teaching. Although I tutor older students this is a good way of engaging older students as well. They all seem to love Halloween and making masks seems like a fun thing to do, both for parent and child!

    1. Yes, older students can also benefit and enjoy some of these projects. I’m sure they would love to make the masks. I wonder even if there is a way to incorporate higher level math/reading into these activities.

      1. The plates used for masks could be used to work out their circumference, areas etc., with a piece of string. Similar sort of thing with apple prints. They can make areas and calculate approximately what they are.
