Valentine’s Day Activities for Students: Writing
Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to bring some sweetness into your classroom. Even better, it’s an opportunity to strike up the love with your students while also practicing writing skills. While these activities are geared more towards elementary school students, you can easily adjust them for older kids as well. For example, if you have older students, let them write their own poems or essays instead of having a partner do it for them. If you have younger students, let them choose which one they want to complete. It all depends on how comfortable your students are with writing vs. listening and speaking vs. looking and nodding. Whatever you decide on, read on to discover some amazing Valentine’s Day activities for students.

Build a Treat Writing
This is an amazing activity that is made to be used digitally. In this set of writing prompts students will be able to write stories about different types of treats that they build. They will build a bakery, cake, ice cream sundaes, and cupcakes and then write stories about them. The stories can build on each other or be stories in their own right. This is perfect for Valentine’s Day because there is no better way to celebrate love than with sweets. You can also either do these writing activities over a week in your class, assign them for homework, or use them as writing centers. Plus since it is digital it can be an independent activity that students are able to do with little instruction. Valentine’s Day Character Writing
Another digital writing activity that I have is a Valentine’s Day character writing activity. In this activity, students can choose from 3 different Valentine’s characters per slide and write a story about that character. Like the build-a-treat writing activity, there are 5 prompts that can be used for centers, homework, or just done together as a class. To grab your copy click here.
Another activity that you can do for Valentine’s Day Characters writing is to have students finish an unfinished story using the characters on a Valentine’s Day card. This can be a fun way to practice building characters while also learning more about this special holiday. You can have students work in pairs or in small groups and then share the story with the rest of the class once they’re finished. If you want them to be more creative, let them add a few twists to the characters, like having the boy character be a girl or vice versa.

Love Poems
If your kids like to write, then this is a great way to get them to explore romantic feelings in a creative way. Start by asking students to think about what love means to them. Then, have them write a poem about love. After they’re finished, help them find a partner to read their poem to. Ask them to choose someone to who they feel the poem relates. For instance, a family member or special friend and they can take the poems home to give that person.
Alternatively, you can have them write love poems to objects. For example, their favorite toy, food, pencil, clothing item, etc. It will show you the items that are important to your students and it is fun to think of love for objects. Plus an ode to mac and cheese is sure to be a great poem. This also takes the pressure off of kids if they don’t have a person they would write a poem to.

Valentine’s Opinion Essays
For this activity, have students write an opinion essay about Valentine’s Day. You can ask them to write about the benefits and/or downfalls of the holiday, how it makes them feel, or any other topic that relates to it. You can also let them choose their own topic as long as it’s related to Valentine’s Day. Once they’re finished writing, have them read their essay aloud to the class. This can be a great way to get everyone talking and thinking about this special holiday.
Alternatively, you can also pick two items in like a would you rather game that students have to pick from for their opinion essays. This opens up possibilities to look at data and polls for the class to cover math concepts. You can also have your students face off in debates for their side.

Writing from Coloring Pages
If you have a couple of coloring pages or other print-outs related to Valentine’s Day, have your students write about them. You can either have them write a poem or an opinion essay. These are just a few examples of what your students might choose to write about. Coloring pages work great for this activity because they already have images on them. This way, your students don’t have to try and come up with their own creative pictures to write about. They can just focus on putting their thoughts down on paper instead.
