Self Love Techniques

As the new year comes into full swing, consider adding “teach my child about self-love techniques” to your New Year’s resolution. It may not be on the list of topics for parents to discuss with their child, but it is important and can have a long-lasting positive impact on how your child view themselves. It’s easy to spot when a child is confident, flourishing in their personal and academic life, and know how to take the right steps to protect their well-being. But some children could use the positive reinforcements and a basic understanding of self-love.
Here are five ways you can encourage self-love among your child.

Self- Love Techniques #1: Replacing negative thoughts with the positive

Sometimes we can be our own worst critics. Best-selling author Gabrielle Bernstein describes judgment as separation from love. Encourage your child to become aware of self-criticism. This way, they’re able to spot and replace negative thoughts or feelings about themselves with positive attributes.

Self-Love Techniques #2: Get active

Being active releases hormones such as endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and testosterone. In general, the release of these hormones can improve ones’ mood, help fight anxiety and depression. Encourage your child to get active in their favorite sports or other recreational activity. This will help build confidence, self-love, and their self-esteem.

Self-Love Techniques #3: Choose friends wisely

Another way to encourage self-love is to speak with your child about the impact of friends and the importance of choosing them wisely. Kids, like adults, will connect with other kids their age from different backgrounds. Consider promoting healthy relationships from a young age. It’s true that children watch their parent’s mannerisms, like how they speak or react to others. Set the example by demonstrating how you would react in certain situations.

Self Love Techniques #4: Focus on strength, not weaknesses

Even as adults, we tend to focus on our weaknesses rather than our strengths. This can lead to negative thoughts and perceptions of oneself and abilities. Promote your child’s strengths by giving praises and encouraging them to continue to build on their natural talents. This will help improve a child’s self-love because they will realize and even come to adore their imperfections while actualizing their talents.

Self-Love Techniques #5:  No means no

It’s easy for a kid to become overwhelmed. They’re juggling school, after-school activities, sports, and homework. When you give too much of yourself away to others you can forget to love yourself first. Support your child’s ambitiousness but also teach them that it is okay to say no. It can be hard and honestly, even awkward to say no to coaches, teachers, or other adults in leadership positions, but it’s an important lesson for kids to learn earlier in life.
Self-love is a sensitive and personal topic, but by implementing these five tips your child will learn how to appreciate themselves first.
