Valentine’s Day Activities for Elementary Students #1

Valentine’s Party Math Project

Let’s start with Valentine’s party math projects. This project will have your students working on the planning of a Valentine’s Day party for the class. You can give them scenarios where they will have to add, subtract, multiply or divide. For instance, you may write a word problem that says you have to make valentines for each student in this class and each Valentine has two images. How many images will you have on all the Valentines? Students will then multiply the number of kids in class by 2 to find the number of images. You can also have them work on a budget for the party. Then give them things they can spend money on for the party and they can add, subtract, and multiply to get the items they want but make sure that they keep within budget. You might even throw a party at the end of this that works with their scenarios or have them make valentines for the class using two images apiece. It makes it more hands-on and has your students working towards something together. It also will make your students feel like they are a part of planning the actual party for the class.

Valentine’s Multiplication Drills

Math drills are an excellent way for students to practice and master basic math facts. We’re certain that you’ve used them in your classroom, but did you know that you can use them to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Depending on the grade level of your students, you can ask them to multiply by 7 or 13. For younger students, you can ask them to multiply by 2 or 5. Once they’ve completed their calculations, they can write their answers on heart-shaped paper. Afterward, you can display these papers around the classroom as a Valentine’s Day decoration. This activity is best for students who have mastered their multiplication facts. If you have students who are still struggling with their math facts, you can use these drills as a remedial lesson.

If you are looking for Valentine’s Multiplication Drills that you can use for math centers. I have the perfect ones for you they are available on boom cards or on Easel as digital math activities. This means that you can have your students work on them on their IPad or Chromebooks and they will have immediate feedback on their work. This will let them know what they got wrong and what they got right immediately which will help reinforce their multiplication tables. On boom cards, you can also print out the cards and turn them into task cards for your class to use physically in math centers. You can also project these and work on them together as a class in an interactive lecture activity.

Double-Digit Multiplication Math Centers

Another math center that would be great for Valentine’s Day is my double-digit multiplication build a treat centers. In these centers, students will answer double-digit multiplication problems or long-division problems and after they answer three they will be able to take a brain break and build a type of treat. These are perfect for Valentine’s Day because treats are a big part of the holiday. You can even build it into the party and have your own build-a-cupcake, or build-an-ice-cream cone stations. You can also make this a cross-curricular activity by having students write stories about their treats or how-to essays about how to make them.

Arrays with Hearts

We’ve saved the best for last. For this activity, you’ll need a large sheet of paper, some red marker pens, and of course your students. Once you’ve assembled these materials, you can ask your students to write their names on the sheet of paper. Next, they should draw a heart on the paper and write their name below the heart. Once all your students have finished creating their hearts, you can hang these hearts around the classroom. This is a great way to show your students that you care and that you appreciate their hard work. Then throughout the month of February, you can use the hearts to model math problems on the walls with multiplication arrays, etc.

You also can make smaller scale arrays with printed hearts, mini erasers, ten frames, etc. This will allow your students to do hands-on projects with these little manipulatives and really make the math come alive to them. Which truthfully is the cherry on top of the cake.
